Beautiful Beach Houses

Beautiful beach houses trump fancy resorts or hotel rooms any day. You give your destination lots of thought. But your choice of accommodation is every bit as important. It filters your perception of your destination -- for better, or not.

How would your beach vacation be different in a sleek, but anonymous, hotel room and a cozy bungalow with beach towels and boogie boards right there? The beauty of vacation rentals is that each one is unique. Most are designed not for cookie-cutter efficiency, but to reflect the essence -- the soul -- of a particular place.

Of course, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But here are five powerful place-attributes I look for in the beach houses featured on this site -- five things you might want to toss into the mix as you search for your next vacation rental.

1. Energy

Yes, sometimes I want the drama of waves crashing right at my door.

But other times, I'd rather be tucked away from the rest of the world, in a private pocket nobody else knows about.

2. Character

Beach houses come in all shapes, sizes and characters. I adore cottages and cabins, eco-friendly furnishings, palpable history (or at least an interesting back story).

On vacation, I want to be surprised and charmed by a way to live that's very different than my own everyday-life experience.

3. Pampering

High thread-count sheets, fragrant candles, hand milled soap.

I forget to pamper myself in real life. Even the simple, small things make me remember to do that.

4. Room(s) for Inspiration

The beautiful beach houses I select have decks, tiny gardens, window seats, balconies with rocking chairs. Even an interesting collection of books or CDs takes me outside of the reality "box" I've created.

I start thinking more creatively and I like that.

5. A Genuine Welcome

A handwritten note, a vase of fresh flowers, thoughtful advice and recommendations.

There's really nothing quite like a sincere welcome.
