What it’s like to stay
Yes, my husband was still fielding calls from work an hour after we settled into our one-bedroom apartment. But the hypnotic blue water — winking at us from wall-to-wall living room windows — gradually worked its magic.
Pretty soon, we were feeding seagulls from our private deck as fishing boats chugged past with the final catch of the day.
By the time the burnt-orange horizon melted into the candlelight-glow in our living room, we were drowsing on the sofa. We were finally lulled to sleep by the continuous croon of the harbor horn.
During our four days At The Bay's Edge, we read. We napped. We walked the nearby beaches and poked around the charming local towns of Occidental and Duncan's Mills. We developed short-term amnesia about frantic to-dos.
The cozy one-bedroom apartment has a sweeping view of the Bay.
Lay of the land
A landmark in Bodega Bay California, weathered and barn-like At The Bay's Edge houses two apartments, each with its own private entrance, private balcony or deck, wood burning stove and wraparound view.
Both are decorated with the understated style of a beach bungalow and will pamper you with creature comforts —- including plenty of plushy bath towels, scented candles and plump pillows, a shampoo-and-soap dispenser in the shower and bedside lamps you turn on and off with the lightest brush of your fingertips.
Our one-bedroom unit made a snug cocoon for two people who wanted to relax and reconnect. The queen-sized bed is luxuriously outfitted with a brocade comforter and lots of pillows. The sunny, yellow bathroom has a greenhouse window.
The two-bedroom apartment has several Bodega Bay views.
If you need more room, At The Bay's Edge also has a two-bedroom unit that can comfortably accommodate two couples or a small family. One bedroom has a king-sized bed, the other a queen, and the bathroom is nice and roomy.
Amenities
Of course, At The Bay's Edge has all the modern conveniences —- including satellite TV/DVD/CD player, free Wi-Fi and unlimited long distance.
Although there wasn’t a barbecue grill on our balcony, we were impressed with our first attempt to prepare fresh salmon from the Bodega Bay California fish market at Lucas Wharf restaurant, basted with its own scrumptious herb butter, using the counter top George Foreman grill.
Life on the water, with California state beaches just a few miles away.
The very best things
• The water views from the private balcony (in the one-bedroom unit) and the waterside deck (across the parking lot from the two-bedroom unit)
• Close to championship golf and award-winning Northern California wineries in Sonoma County and Napa Valley
• An all-season destination, if you love watching wildlife; enjoy some of the best whale watching in California from land at Bodega Head
• So many personal touches, you'll feel like you’re staying at a friend’s place. Such as?
-A pair of binoculars for watching life on the water right outside your window
-A beach blanket; a string of beautiful California state beaches begins within a mile of your apartment
-A guide to preparing fresh seafood —- and advice on where to buy it locally
-A copy of Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Birds” —- filmed in Bodega Bay 40 years ago
-A full pitcher of filtered water in the refrigerator and a popcorn maker
What's not perfect
• The one-bedroom unit is very snug, with low ceilings
• Don't expect high style; the furnishings have a beach bungalow-basic charm
• Renters in the two-bedroom unit have to cross the parking lot to reach the stairs to the waterside deck
In an emergency
The rental property manager lives on-site. Don’t expect room service -— but do plan on being well looked after and feeling very much at home!

At The Bay's Edge: Owner's Favorites ...
Terrapin Creek Cafe. What a nice surprise... I really enjoy everything about this place! The food is incredible, the owners are really nice and very involved in every detail, and the environment is both relaxing and beautiful. The menu changes weekly, always fresh and organic. They also have coffee and pastries/desserts to go!
Spud Point Crab Company looks like just another small local cafe. But it has the best clam chowder you've ever tasted! The owners (residents of Bodega Bay California) operate the fishing boat that stocks it, so you can't find fresher seafood.
Bodega Links Golf CourseRobert Trent Jones Jr. designed this course and it's one of the top golf courses in Northern California ...it's challenging and on a breathtaking site right here in Bodega Bay California!
