Pet friendly beach vacation rentals are in good supply on the California coast. Here are some of my favorites.

Even if a home is not advertised as pet friendly, it can pay to ask. Encinitas homes are closest to dog friendly beaches in Del Mar.

You can take dogs on dog friendly beaches in La Jolla before 9 a.m. and after 6 p.m. In addition, there are four dog friendly beaches (no leashes required) within a 20-minute drive.
All 11 La Jolla rentals are pet friendly (with a $500 refundable deposit). "I encourage it!" says Michelle Aarons, who logged 20 years as a groomer before becoming a vacation rental property manager. You can take dogs on La Jolla beaches before 9 a.m. and after 6 p.m. In addition, there are four dog friendly beaches (no leashes required)within a 20-minute drive. Michelle recommends driving 10 minutes to Fiesta Island.
Family friendly San Diego Sunset Vacation Rentals (located on or near Mission Bay or Mission Beach) has seven pet friendly beach vacation rentals in its inventory.
The Laughing Buddha Beach House Vacation Home Shell Beach/Pismo Beach Even with antiques and fine art, "The Laughing Buddha is super pet friendly," says owner Diana DeGarmo.
About a dozen homes (marked with a paw print) welcome dogs. The area is dotted with dog friendly beaches -- including Carmel City Beach, Asilomar State Beach, Pebble Beach Quarry and Marina State Beach -- along 18 miles of paved Monterey Bay Coastal Trail.
