Golden Gate Getaway ... What it's like to stay

The Marina District is my favorite San Francisco neighborhood. Tucked between the Golden Gate Bridge and Fisherman’s Wharf, with San Francisco’s signature hills at my back, I feel like I’m in the palm of the city.

I arrived on a sparkling, sunny fall day perfect for walking. Parking is limited to the street, so don't bring a car if you don't have to. You can walk to most top San Francisco attractions, including Fisherman's Wharf. But you can also spend the morning strolling one of best San Francisco beaches toward the magnificent Golden Gate Bridge. In a city full of wonderful restaurants, I opted for carry-out, so I could dine at “home,” on the deck overlooking the backyard.

Golden Gate Getaway is ingenious in the ways it transforms practicality into romance. Virtually all the lights are on dimmers. Play with them to create “tricks” of lighting (kitchen: fade to black), subtly shifting focus, so the one room has half a dozen cozy nooks and personalities.

And of course, who could resist the Jacuzzi-style jetted bathtub in the bathroom that is more like a mini-spa. As the water pummeled the kinks from my legs and back after a day of walking the city, the shimmering tiles -- a random pattern of sea-greens -- was my private Caribbean bay. In the cabinet: shampoos, conditioners, bath foam and body lotion. And soft, thirsty, bath towels warming on the towel warmer.

The weather in San Francisco may tend toward fog --especially in the summertime. But if you're lucky like I was, the mournful moan of the fog horn (a sound I miss mightily now that I live inland) will make you feel more snug in your cozy cocoon.

Here's a link to a San Francisco Chronicle article about the transformation of Golden Gate Getaway.

Lay of the land

Owners Ann and Tim transformed the once-cramped studio apartment on the ground floor of their 1930s townhouse into an ultra-stylish, East-meets-West suite that was showcased on HGTV’s “Before & After”.

The clean lines and simple geometric shapes of this San Francisco rental make the small space (really just one room with a step up to the bedroom and bathroom) seem larger.

What saves it from clinical leather-and-chrome is the voluptuous stew of colors -- ripe persimmon, red chili pepper, eggplant, pumpkin and tangy lime -- and a range of textures that beg to be touched, such as the smooth, honey-gold bamboo hardwood floors and glistening kitchen back splash of mosaic-sized tiles. The result is a welcoming, “please sit” comfort.

The organic theme is carried a step further in the simple elegance of decorative accents—a row of fresh green apples along a kitchen ledge, a vase of fresh lilies, orange slices and red peppers steeping in a “spicy orange vinegar” that’s like a work of art.

The back wall of Golden Gate Getaway is almost all glass with a welcome view in the middle of the city: a private deck overlooking a wash of river stones on a lush rectangle of green grass.

In the bedroom, mix candlelight with the translucent glow through Japanese Shoji (rice paper) closet doors.

The furniture does double-duty, which also adds multi-purpose functionality to the different “rooms.” Spring open a door under the glass-top kitchen island to pull out the TV that swivels to face the living room.

The minimalist design includes a spa bathroom and dressing area.

Amenities

Of course, there are all the modern conveniences you can't live without -- including satellite TV/DVD player, stereo/CD player and a full kitchen with a microwave and dishwasher.

But check out the luxe linens, down pillows, spa amenities (a jetted tub) and European-style luxuries (a towel warmer).

The very best things

• A flat-out exceptional location for a vacation in San Francisco whether it's your first visit or your fiftieth; perfect for San Francisco sightseeing and a short walk to one of the best San Francisco beaches.

• Hip minimalist design with eco-touches such as sustainable bamboo floors

• Inside your private entrance and you're tucked away from city noises, with a deck and spacious backyard

Sub-floor heating is quiet and kind to your allergies

What's not perfect

Street parking only; but in this location, you don’t really need a car

No view -- although the spacious backyard is peaceful, relatively private and rare in the city

• The minimalist decor of this hop San Francisco rental is sharp, but anonymous; if you have your heart set on classic San Francisco style, there are plenty of Victorians and Edwardian cottages for rent.

• San Francisco beaches are unique; you'll see surfers, but don't expect the Beach Blanket Bingo crowd. Fog is common and the water is frigid. But where else can you have the Golden Gate Bridge frame your view?

In an emergency

The owners of this San Francisco rental live upstairs (although they travel regularly).

Golden Gate Getaway: The Owner's Favorites ...

Crissy Marsh was part of a major wetlands restoration project that transformed acres of asphalt to a thriving 20-acre habitat for marine life and shorebirds in the Presidio. You enter through an unlocked gate, cross the footbridge and (depending on the time of year and the tide), you can spy on a variety of ducks and shorebirds. This brush with nature with the heart of the big city is what makes Crissy Field one of the best San Francisco beaches.

By the way, other great San Francisco beaches -- such as Baker Beach, on the west side of the Golden Gate, and Ocean Beach, facing the Pacific Ocean -- are just a short drive.

San Francisco Muni You can walk almost everywhere in the City from this San Francisco rental. But for those times when you need a cable car, streetcar or ferry, this site gives you quick access to routes and schedules and even an online Trip Planner.

Fort Mason Center is one of San Francisco’s best-kept secrets. For decades, it was the nerve center of wartime embarkation programs. But today a cultural hub -- where you can browse through a handful of museums, dine with a spectacular view of the Golden Gate Bridge at Greens (a veteran among award-winning San Francisco restaurants) and enjoy a David Mamet-quality play.
