What it’s like to stay

I was blessed with spring-like temperatures and brilliant sunshine during my late January stay at Sanctuary by the Sea Pacific Grove. (I’m a big fan of traveling in the off-season.)

Take time to just BE, advises the guest book. And it's so easy here.

From the balcony of Sanctuary by the Sea Pacific Grove, I watched seagulls wheel around and swoop in at eye level and soak up fresh ocean breezes. While the horizon was turning pink and lavender, I was still watching over a glass of local wine from Silvestri Winery in nearby Carmel Valley and the homemade sun-dried tomato and pesto torta.

After dark, I dimmed the lights, started a fire and browsed though stacks and shelves of books covering every subject from Balinese design to “How to Live Life at the Beach”. Even wall plaques were chances for enlightenment -- or at least a smile. There’s a rambling “Notice to Visitors” handwritten by Henry Miller (a long-time resident of Big Sur) in the downstairs bathroom.

And I adored this framed “Motto To Live By”:

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, latte in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and screaming ‘WHOO HOO, what a ride!

When I finally ventured out from Sanctuary by the Sea Pacific Grove the next morning, I spied baby harbor seal pups lolling on a protected beach along the Monterey Bay Coastal Trail on my circuit of the Cannery, the gorgeous coast and downtown Pacific Grove California.

Lay of the land

Unlatch the gate to a private courtyard blooming with fresh flowers and step inside the two-story entry of this 1,800-square foot Mediterranean-style house.

Sanctuary by the Sea Pacific Grove has a reverse-floor plan means the living area and master bedroom are upstairs where the view is best. Pitched, beamed ceilings, French doors and a wall of windows make this space feel expansive. Two balconies -- one long and narrow, off the living room, the other large enough for only one off the dining room -- invite you linger over a lavender-pink sunset.

Then snuggle into the chocolate-brown sofa/chaise to read or chat. There’s an easy flow from the living room to the dining room and open kitchen. The sofa and facing futon both convert to single beds, if necessary. The large flat-screen TV fits above the corner gas-log fireplace like art. Stacking boxes are filled CDs and DVDs. Take your favorites to play on your bedside CD player.

An intricately carved double door from Bali commands the living room and the whole house is dotted with potted orchids, bunches of lilies and sunflowers, fat candles, pillows. Recessed lights on dimmers create a magical mood after dark.

The open kitchen has top-of-the-line professional appliances, including a Wolf stove, and every utensil, pot, serving dish, plate and cocktail glass you need to create a multi-course gourmet meal. Brew a cappuccino. If you’re feeling adventurous, dive into the book shelf of cookbooks. The kitchen bar is perfect for socializing or kids’ meals.

Spacious bedrooms and the master (left) has a private balcony.

Tucked away off the main area, past the half-bath, the master suite has a low-beamed ceiling, king-sized bed and its own private balcony. There’s a TV/DVD player hidden in the armoire, a huge walk-in closet.

Downstairs, Sanctuary by the Sea Pacific Grove has two more roomy bedrooms -- with queen-sized beds and walk-in closets -- share a full bathroom. The Garden Room facing the courtyard wall decorated with wrought iron and potted geraniums is a little dark, but cozy. In the Ocean View room, you can wake to a patch of blue ocean.

The beds are mini-sanctuaries. The king has a memory-mattress and the queens, optional “non-feather” toppers. Cocooning in layers of soft cotton (hypoallergenic) linens and down is one of the pure pleasures of your stay.

Both showers are lined with thick terracotta tiles and have large rain shower heads. Downstairs, the shower is three steps down behind a partial wall.

The Monterey Bay Coastal Trail is just steps from Sanctuary by the Sea Pacific Grove California. Lovers Point Beach, one of the most beautiful California State Beaches, is an easy walk from Sanctuary by the Sea Pacific Grove California. Enjoy a homemade torta and wine your first night.
A welcome torta and wine and the beautiful Pacific Grove coast.

Sanctuary by the Sea Pacific Grove: Owners' Favorites ...

Pavel's Backerei Just a 10-minute walk from Sanctuary by the Sea Pacific Grove, you'll find the most amazing almond bear claws, donuts, scones and recession-proof cappuccino ($1.10). You can smell it from down the street! Pavel's is reminiscent of a small European bakery.

Pacific Grove Golf Links This 18-hole championship course is one of the best-kept secrets on the Peninsula! The first nine holes take you through the forest and the back nine was designed by Jack Neville, who designed the original Pebble Beach Golf Links. The prices are reasonable and the views of California State Beaches at Lovers Point and Asilomar and the lighthouse at Point Pinos are amazing.

The Works Bookstore and Coffee House I love to stop here for an afternoon latte served in a huge mug. There’s a small bookstore in back with local books about the area and on weekend nights there is live music.

Passionfish This is the best seafood restaurant on the Monterey peninsula. I always order the crab cakes with extra tomato relish. (Relish with a side of crab cakes). It is so good! The have the best wine list and hardly mark up the wine at all.
