demonstrate such elegant restraint. By decree none of the more than 2,000 homes have manicured lawns or fences. Instead they seem to blend into surrounding forest, meadows and ocean bluffs. No streetlights mar the view of the phenomenal star show. Half of the 3,500 acres is commonly owned open space. Imagine that! And, while you won’t you find a single fast-food restaurant anywhere in the community, living in harmony with nature doesn’t mean doing without amenities. Residents enjoy the use of three recreation centers, stables, a Scottish Links-style golf course and a 2,600-ft. private airstrip. When you rent a home, you’re invited to use the swimming pools (heated year-round), tennis courts, saunas and stables. Not to mention miles and miles of hiking and bike trails. What it’s like to stay
The only way to reach this remote community is to follow California coast Highway 1 along the dramatic -- sometimes precipitous -- Northern California coast. Driving the California coast is a treat -- or a trial for anybody who gets carsick or has a fear of heights. There’s nothing between the tiny bend in the road at Jenner, where the Russian River empties into the Pacific, and The Sea Ranch California. People come here to get away from it all. The space, the quiet, the natural beauty is like a tonic. The sweeping views and continuous roar to the ocean will hypnotize you. I spent a good part of the morning at this secluded vacation rental watching the waves tumble and spray, curled up with my coffee on the cushioned window seat in the living room. I kid you not -- it’s big enough for four adults to stretch out comfortably. During whale watching season (January to April), they say you can spot California gray whales and migrating up the coast with their newborn calves from here! (I was little early for the show.) After dark, the stars are brilliant. The lack of light pollution makes it seem like a different sky. I fell asleep to the pounding surf. In the morning, I followed the path I’d watched hikers take across a wooden bridge and through a tent of cypress trees -- where I met a heron, who had the grace to hold his dignified pose as I crept closer and closer with my camera. Hint: Pack a good pair of binoculars!

Lay of the land
The contemporary interior of this secluded vacation rental is set at interesting angles and paneled in honey-red natural fir all the way to top of its dramatic cathedral ceilings. Two fireplaces -- each set in a wall of stone mimicking the rugged coastline outside -- invite snuggling. Filled with the work of local artists, Autumn Mist has the casual, welcoming feel of a friend’s home. Autumn Mist seems made for gathering the family around the glass-topped table for a game of Monopoly or a late breakfast of pancakes. The owners are proud of recent updates including locally quarried flagstone floors in the main living area and kitchen and a wood-burning stove insert in the fireplace. “We’ve added more artwork throughout the house, with an emphasis on northern California artists,” says Peter DeMarais, a retired San Francisco executive chef, who owns Autumn Mist with his partner, Jonathan Lowell, an attorney. The sexy master suite, sprawling across the entire second story, is a scaled-down version of the living room, but with hardwood floors. In addition to a gas fireplace and smaller window seat, the romantic space has a private ocean-facing balcony with two rocking chairs. While the first-floor bedroom is smaller it has a king-sized bed, en-suite bathroom and opens directly to a glass-enclosed patio with a roomy hot tub. Both en-suite bathrooms have stylish leather-finished granite counters, Travertine tile shower and tub surrounds and hammered copper sinks.

Autumn Mist: Owners’ Favorites
Salt Point State Park
We usually park under the eucalyptus trees across from the dilapidated red house and take a path to the ocean. From there, a network of lightly traveled trails is revealed. We recently enjoyed a picnic among the tombstones of some early settlers to the area. In the spring (during whales watching season) a couple of years ago, we encountered a whale in an inlet right next to the shore -- we could almost touch the creature, it was that close.
Bowling Ball Beach Drive north on California coast Highway 1. Just before Point Arena, there are a couple of sharp jogs in the road. Cross a bridge and you’ll see cars parked on the side of the road. Walking west from there, you’ll eventually come to Bowling Ball Beach (one the spectacular California State Beaches nearby). The name will become clear once you get there. It is very odd, almost as though Salvador Dali painted the scene. (Sorry, we don't know if the rumors of full moon summer solstice nude dancing to drums occurring here are actually true.)
Two Fish Bakery
This secluded vacation rental is also a great place for pet friendly vacations. Sea Ranchers hang out here with their canine family members on weekend mornings, chatting over espresso and pastries. The sandwiches are especially good. (Best to call ahead to reserve them, as they go fast.) Take California coast Highway 1 south from our house, turn left on Annapolis Road and head up the hill. Turn right on Verdant View and right into the second driveway.
